Keith: Inferences from the Isotopic Composition of Water Vapor

چکیده

Air may cross the tropical tropopause either by gradual ascent or in localized episodes associated with convection. While observations demonstrate that water vapor mixing ratios of air entering the tropical stratosphere are consistent with the mean tropical tropopause temperature, they do not resolve key mechanistic questions, such as the relative contribution of gradual or episodic transport, or the role of thin cirrus. As Moyer et al. [1996] clearly argue, observations of the isotopic content of water entering the tropical stratosphere can provide a strong constraint on models of water vapor transport across the tropopause. For example, stratospheric HDO is too abundant to be compatible with the assumption that all moisture enters the stratosphere as vapor during convection. Analysis of recent H2O observations shows that kinetic effects cannot explain the HDO excess. Lofting and evaporation of cloud ice can explain the observed stratospheric water vapor content and its isotopic composition, but the relative importance of gradual or episodic transport remains unresolved.

The hydrogen isotopic composition of water vapor entering the stratosphere inferred from highprecision measurements of DCH<subscr>4</subscr> and DH<subscr>2</subscr>

[1] The hydrogen isotopic composition of water vapor entering the stratosphere provides an important constraint on the mechanisms for dehydration of air ascending through the tropical tropopause layer. We have inferred the annual mean hydrogen isotopic composition of water vapor entering the stratosphere (or dD-H2O0) for the mid to late 1990s based on high-precision measurements of the hydrogen...

Understanding the Sahelian water budget through the isotopic composition of water vapor and precipitation

[1] The goal of this paper is to investigate the added value of water isotopic measurements to estimate the relative influence of large‐scale dynamics, convection, and land surface recycling on the Sahelian water budget. To this aim, we use isotope data in the lower tropospheric water vapor measured by the SCIAMACHY and TES satellite instruments and in situ precipitation data from the Global Ne...

Isotopic composition of water in the tropical tropopause layer in cloud‐resolving simulations of an idealized tropical circulation

[1] The processes that fix the fractionation of the stable isotopologues of water in the tropical tropopause layer (TTL) are studied using cloud‐resolving model simulations of an idealized equatorial Walker circulation with an imposed Brewer‐Dobson circulation. This simulation framework allows the explicit representation of the convective and microphysical processes at work in the TTL. In this ...

Isotopic composition of stratospheric water vapor: Measurements and photochemistry

We present a photochemical model describing the changes in the isotopic composition of stratospheric water vapor that result from methane oxidation and reactions with O( ). We then compare model calculations with measurements made with the Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory far-infrared spectrometer during seven balloon flights that took place between 1989 and 1997. The agreement between the...
